Intra-syllables are the sound units we often refer to as onset and rime. Intra-syllable awareness includes the ability to both segment and blend the syllables in words. Rhyming is part of intra-syllable awareness. Phonemic awareness is a sub-strand of phonological awareness. There are three strands of phonological awareness: syllable awareness, intra-syllable awareness, and phonemic awareness. Phonological awareness is the larger umbrella term covering ALL units of sound (not just phonemes). Because phonological awareness is all about the ability to recognise, combine and manipulate phonemes, the terms phonemic awareness and phonological awareness are often confused. There are 44 phonemes in the English language. The smallest sound unit in speech is called a phoneme. Phonological awareness is an awareness of what sounds are and how they work together to make words. Is rhyming phonological or phonemic awareness? So happy I purchased these! Love Boom Cards!
